Aashiqui 2 Movie Review

Aashiqui 2 directed by Mohit Suri had a lot of expectations build up on it, mostly because of the fame of its predecessor. The Aashiqui made 20 years age was not that great a story, but its music has remained one of the most popular one in Bollywood. Unfortunately, the Aashiqui 2 fails to follow in the footsteps of the 1980s blockbuster. The music in this film is hummable at places, but it is mostly patchy and the music by Mitoon, Jeet Ganguly and Ankit Tiwari falls far short of the score in the original Aashiqui.
The plot is not very coherent and does not contain any surprise. It revolves round a famous male singer, Rahul Jayakar, who has developed an addiction to alcohol. His constant companion and friend, played by Shaad Randhawa helps him to fight his demons. However, when he hears a poor but ambitious girl Aarohi sing in a shady bar in Goa, he makes no mistake in spotting the talent. He helps her find her footing in the industry. Then follows a typical story where the career of the girl takes off while that of the man sinks deeper and deeper. The overtones of the famous Abhimaan are quite clearly discernible, but the matter has been treated with less delicacy. Ultimately, the girl helps him to revive their relationship and love conquers all.
So, Aashiqui 2 does not have anything new to offer. The problem is that the script is also weak in places so that the progress of the film is not so smooth. The plot seems to focus on the pitfalls that come with fame, though the exact reason why the hero turned to alcohol is never revealed. Critic Mayank Shekhar writes "This is a film on the dangers of alcohol addiction, subsequent loss of voice, and the end of a musical career." He further clarifies, "Alcoholic Anonymous and similar agencies that work on alcohol dependence issues should ideally co-opt this picture for their public service message. But they may not be quite satisfied with this effort."
The lead actors in the movie are Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. Both of them have worked diligently and Aditya’s intense acting has already attracted considerable attention. However, neither are yet the finished article and it may take a few more films for them to mature fully.
The film targets the youth and attempts to warn them about the transient nature of fame. This is not an easy subject and the screenplay could have been stronger.
